Over the past couple weeks we have accomplished many milestones in our project! On February 15, we presented our slideshow at Zion Lutheran School which was a great success! I feel like the kids really enjoyed it and learned a lot about high school preparation from our perspective. We have all recently learned these new tips and skills and since they are still fresh in our minds we were able to give them advice about going into high school without a doubt that they would need them or that it would be helpful to them in the future! Our next step was the presentation at Our Lady Queen of Peace. On March 8, we presented our slideshow to the eighth grade class who listened attentively. I feel that they also learned a lot about the importance of high school. I think the best part of the presentations for both groups of kids were the teacher interviews! It really reminded them that you shouldn’t be intimidated by high school and that the there are great teachers there who are always happy to lend a helping hand while also having a sense of humor! I believe in the end we all truly loved being given the opportunity to help middle school students prepare for high school! Based on the reactions we got from both groups of kids I believe that we have truly had an impact. Overall I believe we have achieved the goal of our project; to give back to a certain community that has already given us so much.

Throughout this week our group has made lots of progress! We have completely finished our slideshow after the addition of the interview with Mrs. Rudlouf, one of the art teachers at our school. The interview went very smoothly! We even got it done in one take! Kaylyn asked Mrs. Rudlouf questions like, “What is one of the best experiences you’ve had as teacher?” and, “What is some advice you would pass on to middle schoolers who are preparing for high school?” This interview will definitely bring some great advice to our presentation! Another thing we have been working on this week in class is our elevator pitches. These 30 second to 1 minute speeches help us summarize our project to someone who may have never heard of it. We will not only tell them what our project is about, but also how they can get involved! Now, with our speech complete, our group will continue to memorize it and prepare to present it to the class! We have also called the principal of Zion to confirm that we have a projector and place to present our presentation! With our first presentation date coming up soon, we are now getting down to the final details!
Hey! This is Allie with another update for you this week about our twenty-time project, high school helping hand. Our goal is to inform students going into high school on how important it is to succeed and how high school can help you do so! This week we have been focusing on not only how we will present our projects at the schools, but also how we will present our final project. We have decided to make another power point! This presentation, which will have to be completed by April 30th, will explain how well the kids soaked up the message we brought to them about preparing for high school. We may even have some videos to show some of their reactions! This, along with overall reports of how well the presentation went, will be what our presentation contains. Our next task is to finish our presentation by adding our interview with Mrs. Rudlouf! Then, our presentation will be complete and we will be ready to present. Our presentation dates and times are now set in stone. We have confirmed that we will have the tools we need to present at OLQP, but we still need to confirm this fact with Zion. After this we will be ready to present on the dates set! We are hopeful for our presentations and we have high expectations for the outcomes of these presentations!
For our project this week, although we have all been busy we’ve still made a little progress! Our interview with Mrs. Rudlouf has been postponed because of schedule conflicts, but we hope to get it done soon! Earlier this week we were all pleasantly surprised since we got the video interviews onto our presentation! Not only was this a huge milestone for our project, we believe it will add a lot to our message we are trying to get across! We have really enjoyed hearing the teachers and their inputs on how to get ready for high school and we can’t wait to share this advice with the students we’ll be presenting to! Although this week was rather uneventful, we still have been working on editing everything and adding the final touches! Now all that’s left to do it to make sure we have a space to present our project at each school and to also rehearse our parts! Since we are close to the student’s age it will be even more crucial for us to be professional so that they understand how serious this really is and to make sure they are prepared for the challenges they will face! Next week we will most likely make even more progress and start rehearsing our presentation!
So far in our project we have set goals and achieved them! This year for our New Year’s Resolution we have asked ourselves, “What is the goal for our project and how have we achieved it so far?” The real goal of our project is to not only inspire middle school students to strive for success in high school, but also to inform them of what obstacles they may face during their journey. So far we have come a long way! Not only have we worked together on creating the best possible presentation to present to the middle schoolers, we have also discussed and decided on dates, time, and places with the principals of each school. We are all very grateful for this opportunity to give back to our community. All three members of our group went to Our Lady Queen of Peace, one of the schools we will be presenting at, and we all realize how hard it can be transitioning from a smaller school to a larger school. Now not only have we made it through one of the hardest challenges we will face our freshman year of high school, but we have now found an opportunity to help others as well. Our goal for the future is to help kids become more prepared for high school from the perspective of someone relatively close in age. Our hope is that they will learn how important it is to pay attention, put in effort, and prepare for the future!
This week we have made a lot of progress! Not only did we call the principals of each school, we also set the dates for our presentation! We will be presenting at Zion Lutheran School on February 15th and at Our Lady Queen of Peace School on March 8th! We are so excited to work with both schools and to inform students about high school! We also made some cool changes to our presentation this week! We recently interviewed Mr. LeMond, our civics teacher and Mr. Gruen, our honors geometry teacher! We will also be interviewing Mrs. Rudloff, one of the art teachers, very soon! In these interviews we asked the teacher some questions like, “What is your favorite part about teaching?” and “What is your favorite memory from teaching?” to which we got some great and hilarious responses! We recorded these interviews and will put them into our presentation! In the next couple weeks we will be editing these video interviews and figuring out where and how to add them in! Once that is done we will polish up and edit everything! After that we will be rehearsing our presentation and figuring out who should say what! February and March seem far away but if we continue working hard them they will be here in no time!
This week in High school Helping Hand we’ve prepared for not only presentation of our project but also the dates we would be presenting! Although we still haven’t heard a response from the principals of the schools we still have made progress! This week we have edited and added to our presentation. In our presentation we talk about many hurdles middle schoolers who are becoming high schoolers could and will face such as making friends, joining sports, keeping up with grades, and preparing for college. We also talk about how important it is to ask for help! Not only will your teacher be appreciative that you asked them for help, it will also help you boost your grade and more importantly help you understand the topic better! We bring up the sometimes frightening fact that not only should you be thinking about college you should also be preparing for it by looking out for your grades and thinking about what activities might possibly make you the obvious choice when it comes down to choosing which students they want to attend their college. All the members of our team feel like we can offer some great advice on how to reach for your dreams while using your grades and extra activities as a foothold, making them easier to reach. Although reaching the principals has been a bit of a struggle we are all determined to get involved and make a difference in any way we can. So, we will continue working on our presentation and hopefully sometime early next week we will either hear from the principals or give them a call!
Hello, I’m Allie! Not only am I currently a freshman at Civic Memorial High School, but I am also a member of a three part team called “High School Helping Hand”. My teammates and I are on a mission to change the way children see high school! Our goal is to help them get more informed and be more prepared for the transition from grade school to high school! With our help we can teach them from a high school student’s perspective how to keep up with grades, sports, clubs, etc. Right now my teammates and I are preparing a presentation to show to the kids that will bring up some valid points about high school. So far we have made good progress and have developed a great presentation! Right now we are working on reaching out to local schools to ask permission to speak with their 7th and 8th graders about high school and the importance of getting involved as well as preparing for the future. We hope to hear back from them soon! Another thing we worked on this week was our website! We have all worked very hard on putting it all together and it turned out great! With the dedication of all of us we truly are inspired to make a difference! We can’t wait to share what we’ve learned throughout the first few months of high school with grade school students! We know that by sharing what we’ve observed we can help them get more informed! Overall this week went amazing and we are very hopeful for the weeks to come!
